The Billing Service Market
A medical billing service helps physicians obtain payment from insurance carriers and patients by handling insurance claims, and provides information to help physicians to more effectively manage their practice. The trends in health care payments over the past few years have forced physicians to be more concerned with billing and accounts receivable than ever before. While insurance carriers pressure physicians to accept lower fees for their services, government has redefined rules for public health plans and patients have fewer financial resources with which to pay for their health care. Billing services can help physicians manage these challenges by providing services that speed payments, reduce claim rejections, and collect more of the money owed by patients.
Types of Service Offered
Billing services typically fall into two categories: those that provide claims-only services, and those that combine claims service with practice management services. Insurance claims may be printed on the standard HCFA1500 form, or claims may be submitted electronically with a common modem and telephone line. Many physicians are unaccustomed to filing claims for their patients, but are being forced by government regulation (as with Medicare patients), by membership in managed care groups (PPOs, or preferred provider organizations), and patient demand to begin to do so. Both paper and electronic claims offer an opportunity to billing services. Paper claims are satisfactory for many practices, and the trend continues toward electronic claims. Electronic claims are popular because payment time and costs are reduced for health care providers and insurance carriers.
Fees for Service
Physicians have traditionally compensated billing services on a per-claim or percentage basis. Fees vary based upon the depth of service provided. Simple claim filing services charge between $3-$12 per claim, while services that handle claims, provide practice management reports, and work with insurance carriers and patients to recover more of the physician's fees are compensated at a higher rate, usually a percentage between 3-12% of billings or collections.
